The name Winnetka was derived from a Native American word meaning "beautiful". The village was incorporated in March of 1869. It reached its present population size already in the 1930s. Winnetka has long been recognized as one of the most affluent and desirable communities on Chicago's North Shore with stylish, mostly traditional well-kept homes.

There are innumerable, very active community organizations covering interests such as historic preservation, gardens, government, sports, music, theatre and more. Winnetka boasts 28 parks, 3 swimming beaches, a boating and also a dog beach. There are indoor and outdoor tennis and platform tennis courts, as well as an 18 hole and a Par 3 golf course.

Winnetka is also well known for its excellent schools. The Grammar schools are organized into K - Grade 4, Grades 5-6, and Grades 7-8 schools. These schools feed into the highly acclaimed New Trier High School District (Grades 9-12).
