In 1674 Father Marquette's expedition beached their canoes on the shore of present day Wilmette. The village was named after Antoine Ouilmette, a French-Canadian fur trader who lived with his family on the shore of Lake Michigan in the early 1800s. In 1829 under the Treaty of Prairie du Chien, two square miles of land were granted to his part-Indian wife and her children. Wilmette grew after the railroad was built through the settlement in 1854. The village reached its minimally required number for incorporation soon after the Chicago fire of 1871. Wilmette was incorporated in September 1872.

Today Wilmette is one of the most desirable suburbs of Chicago. There are many stately Victorian, Tudor and Colonial homes close to the lake. But there are also classic Victorians, Colonials, Bungalows, Ranches, and Split-Levels in central and western Wilmette.

Wilmette is very community and family oriented. Its 18 parks, beaches and picturesque harbor, golf courses (2 public, 2 private), two indoor ice rinks, large outdoor pool, fitness center, and variety of athletic fields provide many recreational opportunities. The Park District offers a large variety of programs for all ages. The Wilmette Library houses a large selection of various genres of reading materials, computer information and sponsors programs, as well.

Wilmette is well-known for its excellent schools. The village has two elementary school districts: Wilmette School District 39 and Avoca School District 37. Wilmette-39 has four K-Grade 4 schools, one Grades 5-6 school and one Grades 7-8 school. Avoca has only two schools: K-Grade 5 and Grades 6-8. These schools feed into the highly acclaimed New Trier High School District (Grades 9-12).
