Northfield offers many recreational opportunities. There is a bicycle path through the village connecting Cook County Forest Preserve with the Skokie Lagoons Forest Preserve, which also offers boating, wooded trails, and bridle paths. The 320-acre Chicago Botanic Garden is just a bike ride away. Six fine golf courses and other private facilities, such as tennis and garden clubs, nearly surround Northfield.
Northfield's elementary schools belong to three school districts. The area east of the Chicago & Northwestern railroad tracks lies in the Avoca School District, largely a Wilmette district with two schools: Avoca West (K - Grade 5) and Marie Murphy School (Grades 6-8). A small area south of Winnetka Avenue is part of a Glenview school district with two elementary schools: Pleasant Ridge School (K - Grade 6) and Springman Junior High School (Grades 7-8). These students go on to Glenbrook South High School (Grades 9-12). The largest part of Northfield is served by Sunset Ridge School District with two elementary schools: Middlefork School (K - Grade 3) and Sunset Ridge School (Grades 4-8). Both the Avoca and Sunset Ridge School Districts feed into New Trier Township High School (Grades 9-12).
