Northbrook, located north of Glenview and north and west of Northfield, as well as, west of Glencoe, is surrounded by over a dozen golf and country clubs and borders to the east on the beautiful Skokie Lagoons and the Botanic Garden. Since the 1970s, the village has been experiencing construction of single-family houses and also condominiums and townhouses, on a large scale. Its several thriving business districts contribute significantly to Northbrook's tax base. Therefore residential real estate taxes are relatively low.

House styles range from bungalow to bi- and tri-level to Ranch to Colonial.

Northbrook's Park District offers a 27-hole golf course, many tennis courts, numerous basketball and ball fields, as well as, two public swimming pools. There are many recreational programs to choose from. A quite unusual facility is Northbrook's bike track, the Velodome, where US Cycling Federation races are held during summers.

There are four elementary school districts (# 27, 28, 30, and 31) and one high school districts (# 225) with two schools serving Glenview students.
