Highland Park, incorporated in 1869, is situated on Lake Michigan north of Glencoe. Its tall bluffs overlook Lake Michigan; many beautiful ravines meander through this suburb paralleled by tree-lined streets. Highland Park has been named a "Tree City USA" for more than 17 years. There are several business districts. The central business district, often referred to as the North Shore's "Magnificent Mile", has recently taken on a somewhat urban character with new retail, office and also condominium buildings. It abounds with elegant boutiques and shops, some of Chicagoland's finest restaurants, and many cultural activities. Highland Park is also home of the Ravinia Festival, a world-class, year-round performing arts festival. Its programs range from classical to Jazz to popular music with solo recitals, opera, chamber music, but also classical ballet and modern dance.

The housing styles range from historic Victorian, Tudor, and Colonial, dating back to the mid-1800s, to Ranch and stunning contemporary houses. Recently, a significant number of condominiums have been built.

Highland Park offers many recreational activities. There are public beaches, a boat launching ramp, community centers, an indoor ice rink, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a 97-acre nature center, two 18-hole golf courses, a golf learning center and 340 acres of park land. The Park District also operates an aquatic park featuring a water slide, lap pool, and a children's water play area. Several private country clubs are located within the community.

Highland Park has eleven elementary schools (District #112) and two high schools (District #113).
