Evanston is the closest suburb on the shore north of Chicago. For the past 150 years Evanston has grown with and around Northwestern University. The town was even named after Northwestern University president John Evans, who was also one of the nine founders of the University. Toward the end of the nineteenth century Evanston was already known for its many beautiful and architecturally significant houses built by affluent residents many of whom had moved here from Chicago. Many more distinguished homes but also many apartment units were built in the early 20th century. Thanks to timely zoning laws and due to the expansion of Northwestern University, Evanston has preserved older homes and added much office and research space. So today, while Evanston continues to be a beautiful historic city, it has also developed into a modern urban center.

Evanston is a very diverse community, as can easily be seen in its four commercial centers: the central downtown, Central Street in north Evanston, and to the south of the central downtown, Dempster Street and Chicago Avenue and Main Street and Chicago Avenue.

For recreation Evanston offers 263 acres of parks, five public beaches, five community centers, an educational ecology center, two indoor ice rinks, a golf course, tennis courts and many programs. Northwestern University and national Louis University enrich the city's cultural life, especially with music and theatre productions.

The range in architecture is large, including Victorian-, Tudor-, Colonial-, Prairie-, bungalow-, farmhouse-, and American-foursquare-style houses and apartment buildings. Houses range from tiny to mansion in size. Rental properties can be found throughout the city.

Evanston's public schools are fully integrated. The Elementary School District (#65) operates 15 schools. Per Pupil expenditure is $9,083. The Evanston Township High School (#202) has one school. Per pupil expenditure is $14,367.
