Evanston is a very diverse community, as can easily be seen in its four commercial centers: the central downtown, Central Street in north Evanston, and to the south of the central downtown, Dempster Street and Chicago Avenue and Main Street and Chicago Avenue.

Northwestern University and national Louis University enrich the city's cultural life, especially with music and theatre productions.
